Meme coins explained: community, liquidity, and concentration

Look past the joke to examine supply, holders, liquidity, permissions, and the market structure around a meme coin.

The meme is the front door

A memorable name can coordinate attention quickly. That can create community, trading activity, and cultural value. It does not answer the mechanical questions that determine how the token behaves.

Two meme coins with equally active communities can have very different supplies, contract permissions, liquidity pools, holder concentration, and exchange access.

Market cap does not equal cash inside

If an illustrative token has one billion circulating units and a reference price of $0.01, its circulating market cap is $10 million. That does not mean buyers have deposited $10 million that every holder can withdraw. Total supply and circulating supply are not interchangeable; a fully diluted valuation uses a different supply basis.

Your trade can itself move the available price: that is price impact. Slippage is the difference between the expected execution result and the actual result. They are related but not synonyms. Uniswap's explanation of price impact connects trade size with available liquidity.

What to inspect

  • Supply: total, circulating, mint authority, and unlock schedule.
  • Distribution: concentration among deployer, team, treasury, market makers, and large holders.
  • Liquidity: where it exists, how deep it is, and who can withdraw it.
  • Contract controls: pausing, blacklisting, fees, upgrade rights, or transfer restrictions.
  • Market access: which venues and regions actually support it.

Why the social layer matters

Attention can be part of the asset’s demand. It can also reverse quickly, be manufactured, or be exploited by insiders. Screenshots of community size are not proof of independent participants, available liquidity, or fair distribution.
