Definition
A private key is a secret number used by cryptographic software to produce a signature. The network can verify that signature using related public information without learning the private key.
Simple example
A wallet signs a transaction locally, then broadcasts the signed transaction. The private key should not be included in the broadcast.
Often confused with
A private key is not the same as a password to a custodial account. A seed phrase can derive many private keys.
