Seed phrase

A human-readable recovery representation commonly used to derive a wallet’s root secret and many keys.

Definition

A seed phrase is a sequence of words used by many wallets to encode recovery information from which a binary seed and multiple keys can be derived.

Simple example

Restoring one compatible wallet from the phrase can recreate several accounts, not just the address last shown on screen.

Often confused with

“Recovery phrase” is commonly a synonym. It is not a customer-support verification code and should never be sent to support.
