A custody arrangement in which the user controls the keys or authorization needed to move assets.

Definition

Self-custody means the user controls the keys or other authorization path rather than relying on a provider to authorize blockchain transfers.

Simple example

A hardware wallet can keep signing keys isolated while the user confirms transaction details on the device.

Often confused with

Self-custody does not mean using no software, service, or network provider. It changes who ultimately controls authorization and recovery.
