Definition

A token approval sets an allowance that lets a specified spender transfer a defined amount of an ERC-20 token on the owner’s behalf.

Simple example

Approving a swap contract for 100 tokens does not move them immediately. It lets the contract call transferFrom later within that limit.

Often confused with

Disconnecting a website session does not automatically revoke an onchain approval.
